In every home that knows how to welcome, there is a cushion that gets fluffed before the guest arrives. Zareen is that cushion.
The ground is a soft herringbone weave in dusky rose and ivory stripe — the kind of fabric that feels immediately familiar, like ticking on an old mattress cover or a kurta worn so many times it stopped being new. Against it sits a central appliqué medallion: a piece of slub cotton, ivory and uneven, cut into a scalloped oval and edged with a fine red chain stitch border and a raw fringe that blurs the boundary between the two fabrics.
Inside the medallion, a single pomegranate — embroidered in deep crimson with a raised, textured fill that makes it look almost sculptural. Around it, wheat-like sprigs, slender leaves in forest green, and tiny red buds on thin stems. The composition is spare. One fruit. A few leaves. Enough.
The pomegranate has meant abundance and welcome across Persian, Indian, and Mediterranean cultures for centuries. On Mehman, it sits at the centre like a small offering — placed there deliberately, for someone specific.
